I have always been fascinated by the idea of love between a man and a woman being so powerful that it would actually inspire a postmortem tribute that would draw in the fascination of many. The story of the Taj Mahal is my favorite of course. I had come to understand while I was in school that India is primarily a patriarchal society and I knew through reading many of their epics that they are quite the romantics. It was no surprise at all that a man would like to honor his wife but to honor her to such an extent! Obviously there was so much time and wealth spent on this final resting place to a woman and apart from the part wherein the woman is dead what woman wouldn’t want to inspire such dedication from her husband? It is one of the surviving structures of history that make people want to believe in true love.

In fact the Taj Mahal has apparently inspired another man to pay tribute to his own wife. In Bourne Massachusetts a place called Amrita Island takes pride in the fact that it is home to the Love Is Eternal House which has a mausoleum in front of the house. Named for the words that adorn the entrance to the mausoleum the Love Is Eternal House is claimed by the locals to be directly inspired by the story of Taj Mahal. According to accepted local lore the owner of the house located on one end of the island so loved his wife that he buried her near the waters that she so loved and built the mausoleum and the house on the property for her. People point out that if you look closely the house and mausoleum features certain designs that were inspired by the Taj Mahal the most obvious of which are the spires.

But perhaps what strikes me as the most beautiful detail about the story of the Love Is Eternal House would be the fact that is was built on a place called Amrita Island. Amrita in Sanskrit means without death. In effect this love was given tribute in a place without death and as such the man’s love for his wife is without death is immortal is eternal. Isn’t that a beautiful thought? The poet in me trembles with the profundity. Of course I could never be sure if the island was named before or after this pseudoreplica of the Taj Mahal was built it is entirely possible that the island was named AFTER this landmark was built. But the romance of the entire thing is still palpable and no less meaningful either way.

There is no way for me to actually know whether or not this story is true. But whether or not there is any truth in this local legend is beside the point. The point here is that many people do indeed believe that love is eternal or at least want to believe that love is eternal. Whether it is through these extravagant ways or by simply holding on to memories honoring a love so strong or an idea of a love so strong would always have a grain of truth attached to them.

I may not be able to afford a trip to Agra India to see the Taj Mahal. But that does not mean that I can’t at least go to Massachusetts and bask in the charm of a love so pure that it actually transcends the call of death.

Several years ago a young woman named Natalee Holloway was murdered in Aruba and the press capitalized on it. Diaz says Aruba is one on the safest places to travel to in the Caribbean. I would not think twice about vacationing in Aruba. The Natalee Holloway story was rare to Aruba but travel to Aruba was affected. The Natalle Holloway story still receives some press.

Another recent story involved a young girl on a cruise ship that was sexually assaulted. Unfortunately the young girl was allowed to wander the ship alone unsupervised in this floating city of 3000 people. Something parents generally dont allow back at home. The event turned into stories about how United States laws dont protect cruise ship passenger and how cruise lines will not properly investigate and report crimes. The cruise industry was attacked by the press and the safety of all cruise ships was questioned. Travelers were asking if cruise ships were safe.

These stories should remind us as travelers that we should always be alert and stay out of risks way at home and abroad. When traveling anywhere using good common sense will keep you safe. Always keep your children in your sight. Stay in resort hotels and keep to the tourist areas. Dont walk alone at night take a cab dont accept rides with questionable transportation and always keep the alcohol consumption down and stay away from illegal drugs. Going out drinking and clubbing at night always carries some risks. Leave the Rolex watch and the flashy bling bling at home.

Mexico has some great travel destinations excellent beaches and the dollar is strong against the peso. Travel to Mexico is down so the deals are really good. We say take that Mexico vacation and enjoy yourself. Any of the destinations that have been developed as resort areas will be safe. The local economies rely on the tourist dollar and drug trafficking is not a huge business in these areas. Local law enforcement is making sure these areas stay safe for tourists. If youre still not sure stay at home lock your doors and just watch the travel channel.

Figures from the National Caravan Council reveal a 20 percent rise in camp site bookings for July and August while trade in caravans is steadily rising. With many people nostalgic for seaside holidays that they remember from their childhood it is not surprising given the increasing costs of taking a holiday abroad that there is now a huge demand for holidays in the UK.

One of Britains biggest caravan holiday companies Haven Holidays reports a 30 percent rise in bookings with families scrambling for places over the school half term and the main summer holiday in July and August is no different.

Is this year then the time to look at taking a break in the UK rather than travel abroad? Well certainly worthwhile considering but the same rules apply to holidays in the UK as they do elsewhere do make sure you are properly covered in case of emergencies.

Travel insurance for example is not always thought of as a necessity if you take a break in the UK being so close to home and under the safety net of the NHS should you have an accident but travel insurance covers much more than medical emergencies. It is a fact that most people buy travel insurance for trips and holidays abroad but these policies do generally provide cover for travel within the UK though do check the small print rather than assuming that this is always the case. So is travel insurance that covers holidays in the UK worth considering?

One final word of advice though is do check the small print as many if not most insurers do require you to have proof of booked accommodation for a minimum stay of normally 2 nights away for the policy to be in force so the Sunday trip out is definitely outside this definition.

Zion National Park lies in the northwestern section of Utah and provides some of the most dramatic and variable scenery to be seen anywhere in the national parks system. From golden sandstone cliffs towering high over the land to creekladed narrow canyons Zion National Park is one of the world’s finest outdoor ‘sculpture gardens’.

The Virgin River flows through the center of the park and today continues its slow task of carving deeper and deeper chasms in the already 2000 foot deep Markagunt Plateau. Running for a total of 16 miles through sandstone arches and well trodden gorges it finally flows into Lake Mead 200 miles to the southeast.

Within the park you will find some of the best hiking in the world along sandstone cliff top trails at a height of 2000 feet which lead down through narrow canyons topped with high arches. The Great Arch of Zion which is carved into a high vertical cliff face is one of the more spectacular sites and the Kolob Arch Trail leads to the Kolob Arch which with a span of 310 feet is one of the largest arches in the world.

Hikers can also follow Timber Creek and gaze up at the massive red canyons above as the trail gradually descends 1000 feet to La Verkin Creek. This route also provides an excellent opportunity to explore both Beartrap Canyon and Hop Valley.

If you enjoy cycling then you can get in on the adventure. Pa’rus Trail provides a paved car free route that is littered with outstanding scenery. For example you can get a wonderful view of the Kayenta and Moenave rock formations and can stop along the way to check out some of the fascinating plants which struggle for existence in this rocky landscape.

Another transportation option in Zion National Park is horseback riding and overnight excursions lead from the canyons to the peaks where you can witness views of the bright moon across the shadow strewn cliffs. If you are a novice rider then there is also an easy trot which travels to one of the park’s most interesting sights at Checkboard Mesa.

However you choose to travel you will have no difficulty spotting some of the distinctive wildlife which lives in the park. The ringtail the Chuckwalla lizard and beavers are all easy to find and less common you can also occasionally see ravens hovering overhead as well as peregrine falcons and the odd golden eagle. If you are really keen eyed you might even spot the odd roadrunner dashing across the trail near Weeping Rock.

There are also several national monuments on view in Zion and each has truly earned the designation. These include the Grand Staircase Escalante Cedar Breaks and most notably the Temple of Sinawava and the Great White Throne which are natural features whose appearances have given rise to their names.

One word of warning though. Flash flooding is a common risk because the river and its tributaries act as a run off for melting snows and spring rains. For this reason anyone who wishes to explore the park should check for flood warnings before doing so.
